The Burgundies of Marchand-Tawse presented by Pascal Marchand

The Burgundies of Marchand-Tawse presented by Pascal Marchand

from £90.00

In 1985 Canadian Pascal Marchand became winemaker at Domaine Comte Armand, famed for its Pommard Clos des Epeneaux. He was just 22 years of age, with a strong desire to farm organically and, if possible, biodynamically. He left in 1999 to join the Boisset group (Domaine de la Vougeraie) where he stayed until 2005 before striking out on his own to pursue négociant opportunities (we enjoyed his impressive 2010 Corton-Charlemagne at our 2010 White Burgundy tasting). Then, in 2011, he joined up with fellow Canadian Moray Tawse and they succeeded in snapping up the 4 hectare Domaine Maume, which included some great vineyards mainly in Gevrey-Chambertin; this acquisition was the origin of Domaine Tawse.

In tandem with the Domaine wines Pascal continued to evolve his Négociant business under the label of Marchand-Tawse. The talented Mark Fincham and Thomas Dinel were signed up as winemakers for the Domaine and Negociant wines respectively alongside Pascal.

The tempting array of biodynamically farmed wines being made are stunning: modern, elegant and easily approachable, even in their youth. With a lot of very old vines to play with, and depending upon the individual cuvée, whole bunches are used where possible. Critics' ratings duly reflect the excellence of the wines across the board.

We will begin the nine wine tasting with a lovely white burgundy, the 2020 Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Vergelesses, followed by a pair of 2021 wines from the Cote de Nuits: the Gevrey-Chambertin Village from the North and the Nuits-Saint-Georges Village from the South. Pascal is passionate about his Pommard Les Saussilles, having recently purchased the vineyard, and we will taste the 2023 and 2020 vintages. His Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux and Mazis-Chambertin are very highly rated year after year and it will be a treat to taste the 2022 and 2017 vintages of both wines
